Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the potential of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. Lula was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
