The megacity Rises to Hazardous Pollution After Diwali

As Tuesday dawned residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" range.

Extremely High Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the capital recorded an pollution measurement above 500, which translates to 10x the healthy level recommended by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of 1,800, amounting to 15 to 20 times above safe limits.

Firecracker Restrictions and Recent Changes

Beginning in 2020, authorities had enforced a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their major role to the deadly pollution that blankets the city as the cold season approaches.

Yet in recent months, the current local leadership appealed to the supreme court to seek a modification of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Court Decision and Implementation

To the disappointment of public health and environmental advocates, judicial authorities complied with the proposal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be used during designated time windows throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was considerable violation of the designated hours across the metropolis, with little monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.

Several air quality sensors throughout Delhi registered air quality spiking around midnight to some of the worst measurements recorded during the festival in at least three years.

Cross-Border Effects

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the festival also sparked a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region pointing to deteriorating atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from across the border following the events.

Long-Standing Pollution Issue

Alarmingly severe readings of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have remained as a major problem for over a decade and a half, with the condition continuing to worsen.

During celebratory seasons, the concentration of dangerous particulate matter in the air has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the most severe levels ever documented in China's capital, which was formerly considered as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Diverse Contamination Factors

The problem in Delhi is resulting from a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, waste incineration and haze from crop residue ignition in nearby regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, creating toxic haze that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as colder air descends.

Public Health and Financial Consequences

The economic and health impact on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the Delhi area is enormous, according to multiple studies.

This pollution causes elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.

Air quality crisis is projected to be responsible for 10,000 premature deaths annually in the capital.
